Ruffner Mines (Birmingham, Alabama)
ADDRESS: 180 Observatory Dr, Birmingham, AL 35206
COORDINATES: 33.566734, -86.696110
This is a series of abandoned mineshafts that make up what was the Ruffner Mines. Mining began sometime in the mid-1800s and ended in the 1950s.
On July 25, 1971, hundreds of people were evacuated from Birmingham after an explosion of 20 tons of ammonium nitrate at the Ruffner Red Ore Mine No. 2. No one was killed, however, some were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Many people have been said to have wandered around in the mines, and never returned.
