The Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center was established by an act of the state legislature in 1907 and opened in 1909 as the first juvenile detention facility in North Carolina.
Despite being a reform school, this building has had an extremely rough past. Horrific abuse was reported at the school including rape, slavery, torture, beatings, and assault with human excrement. A man who attended the school recounted the cruelties he endured, “He would hit me in the face with his fist kick me and even make me and the other boys get naked, hold our penis out while he slapped it with a rubber strap that came from a scrub broom.” Another previous attendee recounted that if a boy attending the school wet the bed, the boys would be forced to rub their faces into it for failing to wake the boy up. One of the worst tortures of the boys who attended the school was the forced sterilization of six young boys for “misbehaving”.
All of the abuse and horrific treatment of the boys eventually led to its closing. Today, the school is regarded as one of the most haunted places in North Carolina. People claim the angry spirits of the tortured boys reside in the halls.
