The San Diego and Arizona Railroad, nicknamed ‘The Impossible Railroad’, was an engineering marvel of its time. It spanned over a hundred miles through the unforgiving Sonora desert. Its nickname proved accurate after the workers were faced with harsh terrain and logistical errors. It was so difficult that it took ten years to build one eleven mile stretch. The miraculous railroad was eventually abandoned due to natural disaster and financial problems.
