The Only Way Out is Through – 2018

One of the many rooms inside a former hotel in downtown Toronto.

I visited this hotel shortly after it closed and it was filthy, because of the short time between its closing and my visit, I suspect it looked much the same as when it was still in operation.  The hotel is now demolished along with its rather interesting architecture and history that you see so little of in this rapidly developing city.

Work on You – 2018

Located in downtown Toronto along Spadina Avenue, this hotel was one of the oldest continuously operational hotels in the city.  Built in 1900 and at only four stories tall, it certainly did not stand out from the crowd amongst other more well known hotels such as The King Edward or The Royal York Hotel.  It was operational for 117 years before closing in 2017, then finally being demolished in August of this year to make way for a new 20 storey rental tower to be built in its place.  The new tower will be named ‘The Waverley’ in remembrance of the building that once stood in its place.

Some weeks later, the still active restaurant next door burned down. The structure wasn’t well before, so I am sure this place will collapse soon.

This revisit was well worth it as the light meant well with us. Also, remember what I said about the structure? This exterior wall isn’t really a wall anymore.

Woodwork – 2018

This home once belonged to a political figure around the turn of the century.  Having most recently served as a bed and breakfast, it has since sat empty and unused for a few years but is still in remarkably good condition.  With it’s classic Victorian architecture and incredibly detailed woodwork, I hope it stays that way and finds a new life and purpose.
