The abandoned Imperial Brewery in Kansas City,…

The abandoned Imperial Brewery in Kansas City, MO. It’s been locked up tight ever since being decommissioned, so I couldn’t find a safe way in. There was a small hole in the fence where I could fit through, but to get inside the building without breaking in would’ve required a lot of climbing, and it was too wet to get a grip on anything.

Upon setting foot inside this building it is hard to ignore the unique acoustics present. I can’t even describe what it sounded like, other than to say it was a highly distorted echo and I have never heard anything like it before in my life.  With limited time and light sources I had to work quickly to get this shot. Normally I carry at least 4 bright flashlights with me but on this day I decided to lighten my backpack and only bring two. This made things more difficult as it is such a big space and it just sucks up the light. The size of this massive structure ( 6 or 7 stories high) would be lost if I were not standing in the photo for scale.  To the right, you can see the second light source being held by my friend just outside the frame.

Going on 2 hours sleep over the past 40 hours combined with the eerie echoes made for a completely surreal experience and I night I will never forget.

On my final trip to Riverside Hospital – a rare summer visit – I impressed by the way that the lush greenery of North Brother Island added a lively feeling to scenes which otherwise might just look cold and decrepit.  I explore this notion in my latest blog post on The Kingston Lounge.  Here, ferns sprout from the ground of the physical plant, while leafy vines hang from above.  Algae grows on the brick ovens at left, and on the asbestos of the pipe works at right.  Combined with the cool blue light filtering down from above, an otherwise stark and colorless industrial scene is transformed into a vibrant – if bizarre – modern ruins scene.

ianference:

Superfund is Super Fun!  It’s all part of the job for me to spend time visiting contaminated sites, like Nikola Tesla’s Wardenclyffe compound in Shoreham, NY.  In my travels, I regularly encounter amphibole asbestos, PCB contamination, lead dust, and various other nasties.  In the bottom picture here, an underground passageway at this Superfund site was inaccessible – mainly because it was flooded with a viscous orange sludge.  By the time I composed and exposed the two minute photograph of the entryway pictured, my eyes were watering and I felt woozy – but ten minutes later I stumbled across a huge sheet film roller and forgot all about it.

Top print available for sale here, bottom print can be found here.
